Here are a few Independence Day must watch movies that are patriotic, about the first Independence Day, or about the 4th of July and how it is celebrated today:

  • Independence Day
The 1996 film Independence Day is a science fiction movie that centers on an alien invasion of Earth. The movie focuses on a few different groups of people including the President of the United States, Government officials, military, air force, and scientists and how they come together to launch a counterattack on the aliens. Of course this is after the aliens have destroyed many major cities all over the world. The big attack is planned and carried out on July 4, but before the attack happens the President gives an inspiring speech saying,
“Perhaps it’s fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation. We’re fighting for our right to live, to exist and should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, ‘We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on, we’re going to survive.’ Today we celebrate our independence day!”
This is definitely one movie that has some older effects, and silly lines, but the President’s speech is pretty inspiring.
  • The Patriot
In 2000 an American historical war movie was made called The Patriot. This movie shares the story of a man who enters the American Revolutionary War when a British Colonel kills his oldest son and the rest of his family is threatened. The main character of the film is based on four actual American Revolutionary War heroes.
Though there are no giant fireworks in this film, it is based on patriotic actions and is full of American flags and it is a very moving and emotion filled film.
  • 1776
The American musical movie 1776 made in 1972 was based on the 1969 stage musical and some of the dialogue and song lyrics were actually taken from letters of some of the Second Continental Congress participants. This movie is about how the American Revolution and our Independence Day came about, ending with the founding fathers signing the Declaration and establishing the United States on July 4, 1776.
  • The Sandlot
The All-American sport of baseball is featured and highlighted in this beloved 1993 American sports comedy called The Sandlot. This movie tells the story about a group of young baseball playing boys during the summer of 1962. Of course, one night a year on July 4th, the boys all get together to play baseball under the fireworks in order to pretend and dream that they are playing in the big leagues.

Businesses like Grout Works NJ and Pedestal Source and Porter’s Craft and Frame hold special deals and discounts during the July 4th weekend. For instance certain wood pedestals will be cheaper that weekend, certain craft supplies will have discounts, etc. How does your family or business celebrate? What Independence Day activities or movies are you going to see or participate in? Whatever it is you do, have a happy Independence Day.
